The course reflection is always one of the most challenging assignments for me as I have learned so much from each class that I have taken. As I reflect this time, I am thinking about how to engage students on completing more reflection and self-assessment in their own classes to increase students' ownership of their work, motivation to be successful, and desire to challenge themselves.
As shown below in my two previous posts, two of the most important modules for me in this class were learning more about badging systems and finding the colored pencil rubric. I like the ideas of a badge system because it is a great visual representation for students of the skills they are expected to master in a class. Before this module, I would have found creating my own digital badge system daunting but found the resources and tutorials very helpful. The colored pencil rubric is meaningful to me because I already use rubrics frequently but hadn't found a very effective way for students to self-assess themselves using a rubric. A colored pencil rubric forces students to be able to underline specific evidence of completing each criteria which I think makes the process of evaluating themselves much more concrete for students.
I really enjoyed the opportunity to have my own Genius Hour after watching my 21st Century Skills students complete their Passion Projects during the 1st quarter. I have a lot more ideas and resources to use for a Genius Hour or Passion Project now, in addition to other ways for students to assess themselves and the type of criteria I want to include when creating rubrics in the future. I am thankful for all my classmates who posed great questions and shared suggestions of what has worked effectively in their classrooms. Thanks helping me continue to grow as a reflective educator.
