For this to be a good project, I need to research the KonMari Method or find other methods that make it easier for me to part with some of the excesses in my life. I am going to start with reading the book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. I could also watch some of the Netflix series called Tidying Up with Marie Kondo to see her methodologies in action. Another book that may be useful to read is Outer Order, Inner Calm: Declutter and Organize to Make More Room for Happiness by Gretchen Rubin which was just released last week. These are a few resources that I know are available on the topic but also realize there is an abundance of resources available on the internet, in addition to, other books. If you have any tips for decluttering, please share them in the comments.
The most important thing for me to learn in this process is how to purge sentimental items. I have many items I have accumulated over the years that I don’t use but simply sit on our shelves or in my drawer because they have some sort of sentimental value. I’m not looking to get rid of everything that doesn’t serve a purpose but I want to be more selective in what I keep.
I am most afraid that I will regret getting rid of a sentimental item that my mind can’t then let go of. The goal of this project is to reduce the frustration and anxiety that I feel when I am trying to relax and enjoy my home not cause feelings of regret. I am also nervous about devoting the time to this endeavor and not getting frustrated with other family members when I am working to clear clutter and they may not be willing to change any of their habits related to the clutter in our house.
Stay tuned to see what changes will be made!
