I had a major AHA moment during this course when I first saw the colored pencil rubric! I have never seen a rubric like this where different criterion from the rubric is in different colors and students are expected to underline the evidence in their work to show where they have successfully fulfilled each criterion (Brooke & Andrade, 2013). You could also do this electronically by having students change the color of the font rather than students having to use a paper copy of their work to complete this self-assessment. What a simple change to make to my already created rubrics and checklists that will make them so much more effective for students to assess themselves and make improvements to their work helping them become more independent learners. Pictured is a checklist I have used for a couple of years now but that I edited to create the different colored criterion so students can now self-assess in an easier manner. I think this strategy also allows students to take more ownership of their work and be proud of the work they are turning in since they would know how well their work meets the given criteria.
Progress doesn’t have to be overly complicated. Sometimes simple changes make all the difference!
